GIA iD100 screening for lab-grown diamonds

How much does a jewellery valuation cost?

The cost of a jewellery valuation varies based on the complexity of the item, we do not base our charges on the value of the item, rather the time required to assess each item. The cost of valuing a complex triple row Diamond necklace will be more than a Diamond solitaire ring. Our prices start from £150 per item. For a more precise quote, please contact us with details about your jewellery

How long does a jewellery valuation take?

Our standard service usually takes 4 to 5 working days for a single item. The valuation process will take longer if you have a larger collection of jewellery to be valued. If you are requiring a valuation within a specific time window, please do contact us and we can provide you with a precise time-frame.

Is there a Fast-Track Service?

We do offer a fast-track service for insurance valuations. This service takes 24-48 hours for a single item for an additional £100 per item, this service is subject to availability and payable in advance.

Will I need to leave my items?

Yes, you will need to leave your items with us. To ensure that all testing, assessments, and examinations are conducted accurately and in a controlled environment, we require that the items remain with us for the duration of the valuation process. Your items will be covered by our fully comprehensive insurance whilst they are held with us for the valuation process.

Can I get it done cheaper?

If a company offering rock bottom charges, it is usually an indication that corners are being cut somewhere to keep prices down. The jewellery valuation market is unregulated, so there are no minimum requirements for a company to offer a jewellery valuation service, meaning the quality of valuations differ enormously. The charge for your valuation covers the expertise, experience and time of the IRV, professional jewellery equipment used for testing, as well as insurance of your item being valued whilst with the company. Using a highly skilled valuer results in the best value for money, should it come to needing your item replaced, as any incorrectly detailed valuations may result in the failure of a claim with your insurer.

Our Expertise

Are you NAJ and IRV certified?

Yes. Among other certifications, our valuer is registered with the NAJ and IRV, so you can be sure you are always in trusted company and meeting your insurance company’s requirements. The jewellery valuation industry is not regulated enmasse, so there is no minimum requirement of competence for anyone to be able to offer valuations, unless they are a registered IRV; those who achieve IRV status have studied and qualified to show a high level of competence and understanding of jewellery, Gemstones, and Diamonds to provide detailed and accurate assessments. Each candidate must perform to the highest levels during examinations and regularly show continued development to be granted and keep their IRV status as a valuer. It may be a specific stipulation by your insurance company that the valuation needs to be carried out by a registered IRV.

What qualifications does your valuer have?

Our in-house valuer, Rachel, has undergone many years of training and rigorous vetting procedures, standing as a ‘Member Of The Academy Of Experts’(MAE),meaning the Hatton Jewels boutique stands as one of the very few registered jewellers within the UK to offer legal expert opinion and testimony. In addition to this, Rachel is certified as one of National Association Of Jeweller’s (NAJ) ‘MembersInstitute Of Registered Valuers(MIRV)and‘Member of the Jewellery Valuers Association’ (MJVA),which promises her clients the utmost principles of good practice, providing them with a professional service that they can trust.

Her qualifications include:
Gemmological Association of Great Britain Gemmology Diploma, an extensive qualification in gemstone testing

How much is my jewellery worth?

A valuation of an item can cover a wide variety of purposes, whether it is the value for insurance purposes, division of assets, probate or for selling, each will amount to a different figure. If you are unsure of what type of valuation you require to find out how much your jewellery is worth, just contact us and one of our team would be happy to help.

Is there an app or online option for valuing jewellery?

Even with the advances in technology, there is no app that can provide accurate jewellery valuations because technology cannot yet fully test and confirm the various elements involved, such as gemstones and metal types. Professional valuations require detailed assessments and examinations that can only be conducted by experts using specialised equipment in a controlled environment. There has been a recent increase in jewellery valuations completely solely online by photographs, which then produce valuations far from the required standard, mis-identifying gemstones and ascribing the wrong values, potentially resulting in you either paying unnecessary large insurance premiums on an item or not being covered should anything happen to the item, so due to the wild inaccuracy of these valuations, they are not routinely accepted by insurance companies.
