Summer is fast approaching and for many of us various travel plans are well underway.
Planning doesn’t just stop at hitting book on that well deserved trip, it also includes a whole plethora of outfits and the always looming question of what to pack.
When travelling it’s completely understandable to want to take jewellery away with you, but without proper care and packing, it can easily become an avoidable tangle or worse get damaged or broken.
We have thoughtfully created five travel tips and tricks to hopefully diminish any worry/concern about taking your jewellery away with you this upcoming travel season.
1. What's the best way to store my jewellery?

It may seem like there is a simple answer to this question but yet many of us aren’t investing in keeping our jewellery safe and contained, a travel jewellery box/roll allows you to have a simple and well organised selection of jewels with various compartments, this allows for important and potentially sentimental pieces to be protected from tangles and scratches.
When buying one of these game changing travel boxes, compartments are important and incredibly helpful, but say you buy one and it’s lacking in compartments you can use pouches and travel cases and store them inside the box so each individual piece is safe.
With whatever transportation you have arranged, always carry your box (obviously dependable on size) in either your hand luggage or handbag to avoid the risk of it going missing or being damaged.
2. Should I wear my jewellery whilst I travel?
This again may seem like an obvious or simple question, but one of the best ways to keep your most prized and best jewellery safe whilst travelling is to wear it.
Obviously, if you are wearing it you can keep a firm eye on the pieces and ensure they are in your possession at all times. This comes naturally for engagement, wedding and eternity rings but is often overlooked when it comes to other items, like bracelets and earrings.
3. When should I not wear my jewellery?

When travelling to a warmer destination and the beach and sun are luring you in, sun cream is essential. Unfortunately whilst the sun cream is protecting you it’s not protecting your jewellery.
For example if you choose to wear your sparkling engagement ring to the beach the cream can get stuck in various different parts of the ring causing the once sparkling and beautiful ring to be dull and lifeless and needing a deep clean.
Speaking of the beach, sand can cause scratches and even get lodged in any gaps within your pieces. You should also take off your jewellery in the sea, especially rings, the cold water can cause your fingers to shrink which may cause your rings to fall off.
4. Should I use the safe in the hotel room?

When you arrive at your destination, if there is a safe in your room most definitely consider using it, by keeping your jewels secure you are deterring the possibility of it being stolen, lost or damaged during activities.
For high value and sentimental pieces this should be non-negotiable as it keeps your mind at ease and your pieces safe. Keep the safe locked whenever you’re not in your room, and add your pieces to it whenever you’re not wearing them.
Just don’t forget to empty the safe before you leave and use a memorable password that you won’t easily forget!
5. Should my pieces be insured?
When travelling or even on the day to day at home, you should ensure any valuable jewellery is insured this especially includes anything with sentimental value, such as engagement rings or heirlooms.
If you are travelling with high value pieces it may be worth taking photos of each piece and having an easily accessible folder on your computer or phone of each piece with the value as a precautionary measure.
When getting jewellery insurance, ensure you have had your jewellery properly valued by an IRV Accredited Valuer. This ensures that you are receiving an accurate valuation of your jewellery, with a lot of insurers will not accepting values from jewellers who do not hold this accreditation.
By taking a little extra time to plan how you store, wear, and protect your jewellery, you can enjoy your travels without unnecessary worry. Whether it’s investing in a proper travel case, being mindful of when to wear your pieces, or ensuring they’re safely insured, these small steps make a big difference. With the right preparation, your jewellery can remain just as beautiful and meaningful throughout your journey as it is at home.
