Like many traditions, birthstones have evolved over time. Although they have deep historical roots, the custom of wearing them dates back to around the 16th century.

As their popularity spread worldwide, a more modern idea emerged, linking each gemstone to a specific birth month. The twelve gemstones associated with each month wasn’t always consistent.

To bring clarity, the National Association of Jewellers established an official list of modern birthstones in 1912, helping standardise the tradition we recognise today.
