Guide to Ring Sizing

Choosing the correct ring size is essential for both comfort and wear ability, yet many people are surprised to learn how complex this process can be. From the lack of correlation with clothing sizes to variations between fingers and hands, several factors influence the perfect fit.

This guide outlines the most accurate methods for measuring ring size and highlights important considerations to ensure your ring fits comfortably now and in the future.

Finger Size vs Body Measurements

There is no correlation to their clothes size, height, weight or shoe size.

Someone who is a dress size 8 or shirt size medium would not have a standard finger size in relation.

There are slight variations from each hand and finger as well, meaning the middle finger on your right hand can be a different size to the middle finger on your left hand. There’s no fixed size difference between fingers, for example, your middle finger isn’t always two sizes larger than your ring finger.

Accurate Measuring Methods

When measuring a finger for the ring size, we recommend using a fixed, calibrated jewellers sizing set.

This consists of 26 solid bands representing each UK finger size; if you are between two sizes, a half size may be required.

Plastic or adjustable sizers are too flexible and provide inconsistent and unreliable results.

How a Ring Should Fit

To find the correct size, the ring should glide smoothly onto the finger and sit at the base with enough room to turn on the finger. It should not show a big gap or slide freely up to your knuckle.

When removing the ring, there should be slight resistance that requires a gentle wriggle but not so much that it causes pain or discomfort.

Factors That Affect Ring Size

The width of the band can affect the size required. For example, a 6mm wide band in size J will feel tighter than a 2mm wide band in the same size, so using a sizing set with varying widths is helpful.

You should also consider changes in hand size due to weather, hormonal fluctuations, or medications affecting weight.

Over time, hands and knuckles can change, meaning resizing may be needed for future purchases or existing rings.

Special Considerations for Trinity Rings

Due to the nature of the multi and moving bands, trinity rings can be difficult to size accurately. They do not usually match standard single band sizes, and adjustments are necessary. It is best to try a trinity ring in person to feel how it moves and confirm the most comfortable size.

Resizing Options and Limitations

Many rings can be adjusted in size by a skilled goldsmith. However, some designs have limitations, such as bands with multiple stones or larger stones set across the top.

These may only allow minor alterations, and an experienced jeweller can advise on the options.

Full eternity rings generally cannot be resized because the band is a continuous circle of stones. Attempting to adjust the size can dislodge stones or distort settings, making the stones insecure and prone to falling out.

Ultimately, accurate ring sizing requires attention to detail and the right tools. By understanding the variables involved and consulting with a professional jeweller, you can ensure the best fit, whether you're buying a new piece or adjusting an old favourite. A properly sized ring not only enhances comfort but also protects the integrity and longevity of your jewellery.
