Autumn is one of the best times to be in London. The galleries begin their new seasons, the major art fairs arrive, the Royal Ballet and Opera returns to Covent Garden and the city’s cultural calendar quickly fills up.
From September through to November, these are some of the dates worth putting in the diary.
London Design Festival
12–20 September 2026
London Design Festival returns for its 24th edition in September, with exhibitions, installations and events taking place across the capital. This year’s programme includes projects at the V&A alongside events throughout London’s established design districts
It is an easy one to make a day of. Start at the V&A, where several London Design Festival installations will be on display, before heading into Chelsea, Mayfair or one of the festival’s other design districts.
For daytime events, jewellery can be relaxed but distinctive. A vintage gold necklace, sculptural earrings or a coloured gemstone ring works particularly well with the heavier fabrics and deeper shades that begin returning to wardrobes in September.
A Night at the Royal Ballet and Opera
The new season at Covent Garden offers plenty of reasons to dress for an evening out.
Mozart’s Don Giovanni runs from 10 September to 15 October, while Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon arrives on 13 October and continues until 25 November. The latter, with its lavish setting and themes of love, luxury and excess, feels particularly suited to an autumn evening at the Royal Opera House.
This is also one of the occasions where traditional evening jewellery still feels completely at home. Diamond drop earrings, a tennis bracelet or a beautiful cocktail ring need little else around them. Choose one strong piece rather than wearing everything at once.
BFI London Film Festival
7–18 October 2026
The BFI London Film Festival celebrates its 70th edition this October, bringing premieres, galas and new international cinema to venues across London.
The festival opens at the Royal Festival Hall on 7 October with Elsinore, starring an ensemble cast including Andrew Scott, Olivia Colman and Juliet Stevenson. The full 2026 programme will be revealed in September.
The major gala screenings offer the opportunity for a slightly more glamorous evening without requiring full black tie. A good pair of diamond earrings or a classic bracelet can elevate a simple dress or tailored suit without feeling overly formal.
PAD London
13–18 October 2026
Dedicated to historical and contemporary design, the PAD fair brings together leading galleries specialising in furniture, decorative arts and collectible design. It has become a fixture for collectors, interior designers and anyone interested in exceptional craftsmanship.
PAD is smaller and more intimate than Frieze, making it particularly enjoyable if you prefer taking your time. It is also perfectly placed for lunch or an early dinner in Mayfair afterwards.
LAPADA Berkeley Square Fair
27 October–1 November 2026
Later in the month, Berkeley Square hosts another important date for collectors.
The LAPADA Berkeley Square Fair brings together more than 80 specialist dealers across fine art, furniture, silver, ceramics, antiques, decorative arts and jewellery. Every object offered at the fair is independently vetted, with pieces ranging from accessible finds to museum-quality works.
For jewellery lovers in particular, this is one of the most relevant events of the autumn. It is an opportunity not simply to shop, but to look closely at different periods of jewellery design, speak to specialists and develop a better eye for quality and craftsmanship.
Jewellery for the Autumn Season
The best autumn jewellery does not need to be reserved for a major occasion.
A vintage gold bracelet worn to an exhibition, diamond earrings for dinner, or a coloured gemstone ring for an afternoon in Mayfair can become part of the way you dress rather than something kept in a jewellery box waiting for an invitation.
And with London’s autumn calendar looking particularly good this year, there should be plenty of opportunities to wear the pieces you already love, or perhaps find the next one.
