Engagement rings are one thing, but have you heard of the newest jewellery trend... a ‘Divorce Ring’? Leading this new trend is model Emily Ratajkowski, who took to Instagram to share her former Toi Et Moi Engagement ring, which has been beautifully repurposed into two new ring styles, demonstrating that diamonds really are forever.
In an exclusive interview with Vogue, she shares her thoughts on changing the original intention and sentiment around them. “The rings represent my own personal evolution,” and “I don’t think a woman should be stripped of her diamonds just because she’s losing a man.”
Emily was keen on the idea of ‘repurposing jewellery’ as she mentions, “I loved the idea of a ring unabashedly representing the many lives a woman has lived.” Emily had then later approached her jeweller and friend, Alison Chemla, the creative director behind fine jewellery brand Alison Lou, to collaborate on her new concept.
The duo landed on separating the existing Pear Shape Diamond and Princess Cut Diamond into two new 18ct Yellow Gold Rings. Emily mentions “The idea of divorce is a separation, so it was always going to be splitting the ring into two separate but complementary rings,”
“It was a fun project to work on together amidst a hugely transitional period in my life,” says Emily. “Somehow, these rings feel like a reminder that I can make myself happy in ways I never imagined.”
Divorce rings represent more than just a piece of jewellery; they symbolise the resilience, growth, and newfound sense of self that can emerge from the end of a relationship.
By reclaiming symbols of closure and new beginnings, individuals are rewriting the narrative surrounding divorce and embracing the idea that endings can pave the way for beautiful new beginnings.
